CSC Motorcycle Owner’s Rally: Moab, Utah 2019

For the first time in 2019, CSC Motorcycles will sponsor a “CSC Owners’ Rally” in Moab, Utah on May 22, 23, and 24.

CSC Motorcycle Owners will arrive in Moab, Utah on the afternoon of May 21st. There will be time to tour the cool, old mining town. If you haven’t been there, don’t miss a side trip to Arches National Park.

There are numerous motels, B & B’s, and cabins to rent in the Moab area. There are also several campgrounds, some of which have small cabins that accommodate several people. If you are into roughing it, Moab is surrounded by Forest Service land with primitive campsites with minimal facilities, and BLM lands where free boondock camping (no facilities) is permitted.

There are festivals, car shows, and rallies every week during the summer in Moab. Riders are encouraged to make reservations as soon as possible to secure a spot at the best rates. See also www.DiscoverMoab.com.

The Moab area has scenery that cannot be matched anywhere in the U.S. There are unlimited routes and trails for EVERY type of motorcycle. Each day will include two planned rides, with an easy and harder dual-sport route option. Randy will be leading the easy rides each day. Other experienced riders will pair up for the additional moderate routes.

All riders will gather each morning at 8:30 am at McDonald’s on the corner of Kane Creek Road and Main street (Highway 191). The following daily routes are planned, with last minute changes a possibility depending on riders and weather. Note that most of these routes enter National Park lands and an entry fee is required – you may want to get an annual pass to save on daily fees.

Please also note that CSC Motorcycles is helping to coordinate these rides. CSC Motorcycles assumes no responsibility for riders who choose to participate. There is no charge or payment required to CSC Motorcycles. All riders assume 100% of the costs and risks of participation.

EASY dual-sport riding routes suitable for RX3 and TT250: (knobby tires recommended.)

Castle Valley overlook, Moab, Utah

May 22. La Sal Mountain Loop Road. This is a 63-mile loop on paved roads – but with fantastic scenery in the Manti-La Sal Mountains and overlooks of Castle Valley. (https://www.discovermoab.com/la-sal-mountains) This highway loop is also suitable for street bikes, including the SG250 San Gabriel! Side trips to Fisher Towers and Onion Creek will add 23 miles of off-road dual-sport riding including over 20 shallow water crossings. Another 20 miles of highway adds a stop at the Dewey Bridge, the first bridge over the Colorado River. (Funtreks route #36)

May 23. Canyon Rim Overlooks. This route includes Needles Overlook, Canyonlands Overlook and Anticline Overlook, plus two arches, cave homes, and a natural cistern. The total distance is about 96 miles, including about half highway and half unpaved easy roads. (Funtreks route #51)

Island in the Sky

May 24. Potash Road along the Colorado River to scenic overlooks, including “Thelma & Louise Point”. Continuing on the White Rim Trail to Musselman Arch. Return via thrilling Shafer Switchbacks. Optional side trips to Island in the Sky, Deadhorse State Park, and Long canyon trail. Total distance is 52 miles to over 84 miles with optional side trips. (Funtreks route #45, #18)

Moderate dual-sport routes Suitable for experienced RX3, and TT250 riders – knobby tires REQUIRED: (Each rider must also carry tools, spare tubes, lunch, and a minimum of 1-gallon of water.)

May 22. Chicken Corners. (Funtreks route #48) This is a moderate trail that includes the overlook of canyons and the Colorado River at Hurrah Pass. The trail continues through canyons and along the rim with sheer drops over 1,000-feet to the river below. This trail is out-and-back with different scenery highlighted each direction. The total distance is 51-miles.

Note: If planning to ride the White Rim Trail, obtain your motorized vehicle permit on May 22!

May 23. White Rim Trail. (Funtreks route #46) This is a moderate but LONG trail with difficult uphill and downhill sections, loose rocks, sand and slick rock. The unpaved trail is 90-miles, plus 40-miles of pavement riding to and from Moab for a total distance of over 130 miles. (TT250 riders should carry an extra 0.5-gallon of gas!) Note: Day Use permits are required. EACH rider must obtain a permit at a Canyonlands district visitor center or online at https://canypermits.nps.gov up to 24 hours before the ride. Rain date: May 24.

Onion Creek Canyon, Moab, Utah

May 24. Sand Flats Road to La Sal Mountain Loop to Thompson Canyon to Onion Creek Road. (Funtreks #34, 41, 36) Ride Sand Flats Road east of Moab, past some of the famous slick rock formations. Climb over 8,000 feet into the mountains, with views down to the iconic scenery of Castle Valley. Ride down Thompson canyon through old mining country, and finish in Onion Creek, with over 20 water crossings in the narrow canyon. Distance is 33 miles, plus return to Moab for a total of 54 miles. Side trips to Fisher Towers (add 6 miles) or Dewey Bridge (add 20 miles.)

Alternative: La Sal mountain ride. Forest roads 127, 128 Pack Creek, 073, 123 La Sal Pass Road to La Sal. Return via 174 Black Ridge Road and 173 to Hwy 191 into Moab. (See UTBDR tracks for Section 2.)

With the exception of the White Rim Trail, these planned routes will not take all day to complete. CSC Motorcycles is also bringing new motorcycles for demo rides – including the new 2020 RX4! There will be sufficient time for sight seeing on other roads close to Moab. In each case, riders will be gather for pictures at the start of the ride, and check in with Randy at the end of the day.

First Annual CSC Motorcycle Owner’s Rally in Moab, Utah

Make plans now to attend the First ever CSC Motorcycles Owner’s Rally in Moab, Utah on May 22 to 24, 2019.

TEST RIDE THE RX4 UP IN THE SAN GABRIELS

LIFE IS GOOD ON THE RX4

Throughout my life, having owned over 50 motorcycles, I’ve continually sought the bigger, faster and more technologically advanced models to fill what seemed to be an insatiable appetite for that adrenaline rush. But along with that came higher purchase prices, higher maintenance costs due to more complexity and consequently more dealer dependence and also higher insurance costs. Along with the monetary increases, the size and weight increased as well and were becoming more difficult to manage in my advancing years.

In the past year I have been fortunate enough to be introduced to the exciting world of CSC motorcycles. A new concept of marketing and a new approach to motorcycling that represents thinking “outside the box” or, more accurately, “inside the box”. This new business model created by Steve Seidner is a form of mail order that allows the buyer to choose the model he/she wants, and it is shipped to your house in a box, all assembled, tested, gas in the tank and ready to ride. And the various models represent the concept of smaller is better rather than bigger is better.

My first exposure to the CSC family was their TT250, a 250cc Enduro style bike that harkens back to yesteryear when small displacement bikes were inexpensive, easy to work on and fun to ride. I bought it to have some fun in the woods around my home in Oregon. My 1200cc BMW was great in the canyons but I wanted some diversity.  To my surprise, the TT surpassed all my expectations and I found myself riding it all the time with a big grin on my face. And with CSC’s supplied service manual and their video tutorials on their website, I was able to do all the maintenance myself at no cost.  One day, while looking over their website, their RX3 250cc Adventure Bike caught my attention. Here was a bike that could offer the same lightweight, economical fun as the TT but with more power and luggage. I could now travel farther to explore more territory. So, soon another box arrived with my new beautiful copper colored RX3.  More miles and more smiles. So much so that I sold my BMW and haven’t looked back. So far, with a combined 5000 miles on both bikes I haven’t experienced a single problem. Both are comfortable, reliable and 60 mpg economical.

This past week I had an opportunity to be in Los Angeles and paid a visit to CSC in Azusa, about 45 minutes away, to check out their latest and greatest model, the new RX4. This is essentially a beefed up RX3 keeping the same overall dimensions but adding a 450cc single and dual disc brakes. Steve was kind enough to allow Joey, the service manager, to guide me up into the San Gabriel mountains for an hour long, exciting ride in the canyons. Wow !!! What a remarkable motorcycle. Plenty of power, torque everywhere and nimble yet planted handling. Move over RX3, your big brother is moving in and he is now my bike of choice. What a remarkable, well sorted out bike that retains all the wonderful characteristics of the RX3 but adds even more fun to the equation. The only problem is that I have to wait until Spring for the new models to arrive.

Thanks Steve for allowing me to enjoy this unique opportunity and Joey for leading me on a great test ride. Anyone on the fence about buying one of these better get their deposit in now because I’m sure the first shipment will sell out fast.

For 2019, CSC encourages motorcycle owners to participate in group rides, meet and learn from other CSC Motorcycle owners, and experience some of the best riding routes and scenery in the U.S. Randy Reek, an experienced dual-sport rider and long-time CSC Motorcycle owner is coordinating these riding opportunities.

Note: due to popular demand, CSC is planning several riding opportunities in the western states and Midwest. This means that CSC will not be planning a ride to Baja, Mexico in 2019. Following is a brief summary of the planned rides and dates. More details on each of these riding opportunities will follow.

The easier dual-sport routes will be appropriate for CSC RX4, RX3, and TT250 riders, including less experienced dirt riders. The tougher routes (White Rim Trail, for example) will be reserved for the most experienced riders with motorcycles outfitted with heavy knobby tires, skid plates, along with tools, food and water. But much of the best scenery around Moab (Arches National Park, for example) can also be viewed riding street bikes, so even SG250 San Gabriel owners and any others who want to stick to the pavement will enjoy the great riding opportunities.

CSC Motorcycles Group Ride Number 2: Randy will be leading a dual-sport tour on the Trans-Wisconsin Adventure Trail in late summer 2019. The “T.W.A.T.” extends the length of Randy’s home state of Wisconsin for 600-miles. This is a three-day route (June 25 to 27) on mostly sand and dirt forest roads from Galena, Illinois to Cornucopia on the shore of Lake Superior. Plan for an additional two or three days by highway to complete a full circle. Group size will be limited to 10 to 12 riders.

The T.W.A.T. is perfect for CSC RX4, RX3 and TT250 riders – with knobby tires. This will be a self-supported camping trip (riders must carry camping gear) – although motels and diners aren’t far off the route.

CSC Motorcycles Group Ride Number 3: To showcase the new 2020 CSC RX4, a longer road trip is also planned for early Fall 2019. CSC RX4 owners will be invited to join a 1300-mile highway loop through the Southwest. This “National Park Tour” will include sections of Route 66, the Grand Canyon (South and North Rims), Monument Valley, Moab, Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks. The route will consist of seven days of spectacular riding in epic destinations across Arizona and Utah. Group size will be limited to 10 to 12 riders.

CSC RX4 owners can also elect to start from CSC Motorcycles in Azusa, CA (which will add another four days and 850-miles to the seven-day loop.) Or riders – including also CSC RX3 owners – can join anywhere along the circular route. The seven-day loop will start in Williams, AZ on September 5th and conclude on September 11th. (Riders leaving CSC in California will start on September 3 and return to Azusa on September 13.) National Park Tour riders will carry their gear and tools but stay in motels each night.

Revzilla Rides Again: Cruising on the SG250 San Gabriel

Andy Greaser from Revzilla recently took the CSC SG250 San Gabriel out for a spin. He confirmed what we already knew: the SG250 is a hoot to ride!

Here is a link to the full article on the Revzilla Common Thread blog. In summary, Andy liked the CSC SG250 for three reasons:

  1. The SG250 San Gabriel is cheap to buy. For $1,995.00 you can’t begin to restore a 1980’s “project bike”.
  2. It’s fun to ride! The SG250 is light, nimble, and uncomplicated – pretty much the opposite of the majority of most new motorcycles out there.
