Here at CSC Motorcycles, we’re all about fun you can afford—and that philosophy doesn’t just apply to our bikes! Every month, we wrap up our work with a much-loved company tradition: our End-of-Month Employee Cookout. It’s our chance to put down the wrench, fire up the grill, and celebrate a month of adventure and hard work as a team.

September was no exception, and this time, the culinary reins were handed to a man who knows a thing or two about smooth operations: Matt from our Service Department!

The Service Guru Becomes the Grill Master

 

When Matt isn’t ensuring your TT250 or SG250 is running in peak condition, he’s apparently mastering the art of the perfect taco. For this month’s feast, Matt took the team’s taste buds on a journey, delivering an authentic taco spread that was truly chef’s kiss.

The star of the show was the incredible meat we sourced from Lario’s Meat Market in Covina, CA. Matt loaded up the flat top with two absolute classics: perfectly seasoned Asada and succulent Chicken. The aroma alone was enough to bring the whole warehouse running!

The weather was absolutely perfect for an outdoor fiesta. With a glorious 75-degree temperature and a light breeze flowing through the air, we set up shop right outside the doors, complete with the iconic CSC canopy shading the setup. It felt like a mini-rally right in the parking lot! (We even brought out a few of our classic scooters for decoration.)

But Matt didn’t stop at the meat. He masterfully grilled a colorful mix of onions, yellow jalapenos, and green jalapenos. While the chilies added a fantastic layer of flavor and char, neither the grilled peppers nor the vibrant red and green salsas were overly spicy—just packed with a delicious, fresh punch. (Though we’ll admit, the green salsa had a delightful kick that kept us reaching for the Coca-Cola and Dr. Pepper!)

It was a fantastic afternoon of camaraderie, great food, and plenty of shop talk.

This is the most crucial step. Getting your license isn’t just a legal requirement—it’s about learning the fundamental skills you need to be a safe and confident rider.

Here are the top 5 maintenance tips to keep your ride running strong.

 

1. The Golden Rule: Change Your Oil

This is the single most important task for the health of your engine. Engine oil is the lifeblood of your motorcycle. It lubricates moving parts, reduces friction, and helps cool the engine. Over time, it gets contaminated with debris and loses its viscosity, becoming less effective.

  • The CSC Schedule: For our TT250 and SG250 models, we recommend your first oil change at 500 miles and changing the oil every 1,500 miles or at least once a year, whichever comes first. For many riders, that’s a quick, easy job you can do on a Saturday morning.

  • Pro Tip: Always use high-quality motorcycle-specific oil. Never use automotive oil, as it lacks the additives needed to protect a motorcycle’s clutch and transmission.

 

2. Don’t Neglect Your Chain

Your drive chain is what transfers power from the engine to the rear wheel. It takes a lot of abuse from the road, so it needs regular attention. A well-maintained chain is a quiet, efficient, and long-lasting one. A neglected one can cause poor performance, excessive wear on sprockets, or even break completely.

  • Check Tension: A chain that is too loose can “slap” the swingarm and create a harsh ride, while one that is too tight puts unnecessary strain on the transmission. Check the tension regularly and adjust it to the specification in your owner’s manual.

  • Clean and Lube: Every few hundred miles (or after every rainy ride), take a few minutes to clean your chain with a chain-specific cleaner and then apply a fresh coat of chain lubricant.

 

3. Adjust Your Valves

4. The Critical Trio: Tires, Brakes, and Lights

  • Tires: Check your tire pressure at least once a week. Under-inflated tires lead to poor handling and premature wear. Also, visually inspect your tires for any cracks, bulges, or embedded objects.

  • Brakes: Feel the brake levers for proper firmness. Look at your brake pads to ensure they have plenty of material left. A quick peek at the brake fluid reservoir will also let you know if the level is correct.

  • Lights: Turn on your bike and check all your lights—headlight (high and low beam), tail light, brake light, and turn signals—to make sure they are all working.

Whether you’re in a cold climate or just storing your bike for a few months, proper storage is key to preventing long-term damage.

  • Fuel and Fluids: Top off the gas tank and add a fuel stabilizer to prevent rust and degradation of the fuel system. Change the engine oil to remove any contaminants that could corrode the engine while it sits.

  • Battery: Disconnect the battery and connect it to a “trickle charger” or “battery tender” to keep it topped off and prevent it from dying.

  • Protection: Wash and wax your motorcycle, and if you can, elevate the tires off the ground with a stand to prevent flat spots. Cover the bike to protect it from dust and moisture.

Rest in Peace T.K.

Steve Seidner contacted me late last week to inform me that good buddy TK passed away as a result of complications following heart surgery.  TK was a long time CSC Motorcycles employee and he was the first person I met at CSC 15 years ago.  I was a little scared when I first met TK; he looked like one badass outlaw biker.  TK started working for the company when it was building Pro-One motorcycles (the huge V-Twin custom bikes) and he looked the part:  Slicked back long hair, a ponytail, and tattoos everywhere.  I soon learned what everybody who knew TK already knew:  He was a genuine nice guy, sensitive to others’ feelings, soft spoken, and anything but what his image might suggest.  TK and I quickly became good friends.

TK was an amazing salesperson, and indeed, during the 7 years I was on the CSC team, it was TK who sold most of the CSC motorcycles, from the 150cc scooters to the much larger full-sized adventure touring and street motorcycles. Watching TK with customers was its own reward, and it was a world-class education in customer relations. TK was not pushy; he allowed customers to sell themselves on the bikes, he answered all questions honestly, and he never talked down to people.  I never heard TK speak disparagingly about anyone.  It just wasn’t in his nature. 

TK and I had great adventures together.  We rode Glendora Ridge Road often, we rode the little 150cc California Scooters through Glendale and downtown Los Angeles (drawing cheers from sidewalk onlookers), we went to trade shows, we sent lead downrange at the West End Gun Club, and we rode the Hell’s Loop endurance run through Death Valley.

TK’s real name was Thomas Bicciche, but everyone knew him as TK.  He was a knife collector and he had worked in that industry; it’s been said that TK was short for Tommy Knives.

TK was a good friend.  Along with everyone at CSC, I will miss him dearly.
