ADV Moto Test Rides the 2020 CSC RX4 450

ADV Moto: “Could this be the budget adventure bike we’ve been waiting for?”

CSC Motorcycles RX4

ADV Moto recently released an online article that summarized their test ride of the new CSC RX4. In the article written by Pablo Espinosa, he asks the question: “Could this be the budget adventure bike we’ve been waiting for?”

For at least 20 years the adventure riding, dual-sport market has had to choose between uncomfortable street-legal dirt bikes (WR250, DR650), over-weight “adventure” street bikes (Wee-Strom, Tenere, BMW’s), and antiquated cross-over models (KLR650, DRZ400.)

Riders asked, “Why aren’t any brands offering an economical, smaller dual-sport with fuel-injection and some basic features important to ADV riding – like a decent gas tank, electronics, and at least a few ADV-features as standard equipment? Why do I have to spend hundreds more to prepare a new “adventure motorcycle” for actual riding?”

CSC RX3

CSC Motorcycles first bucked the trend with the RX3 Adventure. This economical 250cc motorcycle includes fuel-injection, adjustable suspension, full instrumentation, windshield, 300-watt alternator to power accessories, a large 4.2-gallon gas tank, AND a locking rear top box, side panniers, and mounting racks as STANDARD equipment. (See CSCMotorcycles.com for more information. The 2019 CSC RX3 sells for only $3,995.00, plus fees.)

While the 250cc RX3 has been very popular and has developed a family of loyal small-bike advocates, there were many others who longed for a larger ADV-bike. After several years of development and testing, CSC Motorcycles (and their manufacturing partner, Zongshen) has finalized the specs on the new 2020 CSC RX4 with a 450cc fuel-injected, single-cylinder motor.

CSC Motorcycles RX4

2020 CSC RX4 shown with OPTIONAL Shinko knobby tires (Moab, Utah)

The new 2020 RX4 is now completing EPA-certification to enable sales in all 50-states, including California’s CARB standards. ADV Moto was able to take a pre-production model for a test ride, and the article is based on this test. They write:

“At the relatively inexpensive price of $5,395, the 2020 RX4 offers many standard amenities for a 450cc-sized modern adventure-style motorcycle. Though the quality of the parts may not be up to the standards of its German or Japanese counterparts, can it hold its own in reliability and durability at such a low entry price point?”

“The CSC RX4 is manufactured in China by Zongshen under an exclusive arrangement with CSC. Zongshen has become a global entity with true quality control and state-of-the-art manufacturing. And is respected enough to partner with Piaggio, Harley-Davidson, Norton and others to build engines as well as many other components.”

CSC Motorcycles RX4

The Base 2020 CSC RX4 at MSRP $5,395.00 plus fees.

The reader should understand that virtually all power-sports brands have manufacturing alliances in China. Other brands that rely on Chinese manufacturing include KTM, Vespa, BMW, Mercury Marine, Honda Marine plus “American” companies like Chevrolet.

CSC Motorcycles is the co-designer, exclusive importer and distributor for Zongshen in North America. The ADV Moto article correctly describes the warranty and parts support that CSC Motorcycles provides every new owner:

CSC Motorcycles RX4

CSC Motorcycles stocks 100% of the parts for each model

“With over 30 years in the motorcycle industry, CSC stands behind its product with a two-year, unlimited mile warranty. If something requires warranty work within the first year, both parts and labor are covered. For the second year, CSC covers just the part(s) and you pay the labor or install it yourself using the online tutorials on the CSC website. Steve Seidner, the owner, tells me they stock EVERY spare part for their bikes in their Azusa, California warehouse. And more good news, they’re building a network of CSC-familiar service centers throughout the U.S. If one isn’t near you, then use your favorite mechanic for warranty work. If need be, CSC will overnight parts to you or your mechanic. They also offer an extended warranty for up to four years for an additional fee. All this support is confidence inspiring.”

CSC Motorcycles RX4

CSC Motorcycles ready for shipment DIRECT to the buyer.

The CSC Motorcycles warranty is more than “confidence inspiring”. The two-year, unlimited mileage warranty is unmatched in the industry. No other brand stands behind its products like CSC Motorcycles. No other brand has 100% of the parts in stock. CSC will work with the new owner (or a favorite local motorcycle shop) to handle any warranty issues. Zongshen, CSC’s manufacturing partner, has completed several years of reliability and performance testing, including dyno testing at the factory plus a 6,000-mile dual-sport road test across China. This reliability testing is also unheard of in the industry.

CSC Motorcycles RX4

2020 CSC RX4 shown with OPTIONAL Tourfella Aluminum Luggage and racks

Because the test ride was completed on a pre-production model, the writer listed a few features incorrectly. The full list of features (from the CSCMotorcycles.com website) confirm that the CSC RX4 is an unmatched value in the Adventure Motorcycle category. The powerful and economical 450cc motor is paired with a huge list of standard features that cannot be duplicated elsewhere.

2020 CSC RX4 Standard Features:

  • 450cc liquid-cooled engine, 4-valve, overhead cam, with counter-balancer. 40.2 HP at 8,000 RPM

Overland Expo Recap – Two-Wheel Transportation Trends

What’s Trendy in Two-Wheel Transportation, As Displayed At Overland Expo-West

By Randy Reek

I recently had the chance to attend Overland Expo-West in Flagstaff, Arizona. This is the place to see the latest vehicles, equipment, and gear for the broad “overlanding” market. Overlanding has been defined as traveling cross-country, preferably off the paved roads for maximum adventure.

CSC TT250 Enduro

Overland Expo-West by TGH Creative

Tens of thousands of people attended and were able to view hundreds of exhibits. These ranged from modified Jeeps costing over $100,000 to “overland” camping vehicles that cost over $500,000 to simple tents. But I kept an eye out for two-wheel vehicles. There were plenty to see, from more traditional dual-sport motorcycles, cycles with side cars, to numerous bicycle options.

There were several brands of large “adventure” motorcycles on display. But it seems that the trend is slightly reversing and many brands are introducing (or testing the market) with smaller ADV motorcycles. Evidently, riders are tiring of heavy, complicated, and EXPENSIVE 1,000 cc adventure bikes that cost more to buy, maintain, and insure than many automobiles.

CSC Motorcycles has been ahead of this trend for many years. The CSC RX3 Adventure remains the best value in light ADV bikes – NOW only $3,995.00 (plus fees) with tons of standard features and accessories.

CSC RX3 Adventure

The new 2020 CSC RX4 will be arriving in July and the 450cc motor will answer the needs of riders who need more power for long-distance highway riding or heavy loads including two-up riding. At only $5,395.00 (plus fees), the RX4 costs less than HALF of much of the competition.

CSC RX4

2020 CSC RX4 – with OPTIONAL knobby tires in Moab, Utah

Of course, the all-time value leader is the CSC TT250 Enduro. This dual-sport cycle still costs ONLY $2,195.00 delivered (plus fees.)

CSC TT250 Enduro

The CSC TT250 is simply fun to ride!

The base bike is a great platform to customize for your style of riding – adding rear rack, soft bags, different gearing or even new wheels and tires (if you want to be a road warrior!)

CSC TT250 Enduro

OPTIONAL – TT250 Aluminum Super Moto wheels and tires!

The only criticism the TT250 receives is when it is compared to bikes in different categories:

  • The CSC TT250 Enduro is not as fast as a larger, fuel-injected Enduro or Super Moto. But the 230cc air-cooled motor is super-dependable, simple to tune, and cheap to maintain.
  • The CSC TT250 Enduro won’t keep up with racy motocross bikes on the track. It won’t compete with motocross bikes on jumps or whoops. But the light-weight TT250 is street-legal in all 50-states so you can ride it in town and on the highway to the woods.
  • The CSC TT250 Enduro won’t be as comfortable on long-distance rides as other dual-sports, including the CSC RX3 or RX4. Riders HAVE taken the TT250 on some LONG rides – see the article on the 2,000-mile Rocky Mountain Adventure. But the TT250 is only half the price of the CSC RX3 Adventure, and yet is a versatile motorcycle for riding on and off the road.

Attending the Overland Expo reminded me just what a tremendous value the CSC TT250 Enduro is in the market today. One of the hottest trends is fat bikes, and fat bikes with electric motors. Many of these were on display – and on the back of Jeeps and campers.

CSC TT250 Enduro

E-Fat Bikes on Display – by TGH Creative

CSC TT250 Enduro

E-Enduro Bike – by TGH Creative

CSC TT250 Enduro

E-Fat Bikes are the hot, trendy ride (if you have BIG bucks!)

Prices for electric fat bikes start at about $3,000 and go to OVER $7,000!!! Let’s compare what you get with an E-fat bike compared to a TT250:

Range: E-Fat Bike: 50 miles or less (then recharge overnight) vs. TT250: 150 miles (60+ MPG, then refill the 2.9-gallon tank anywhere and be back on the road in five minutes.)

Speed: E=Fat Bike: 20 to 25 mph vs. TT250: 55 mph (70 mph or higher with optional highway gearing.)

Suspension: E-Fat Bike: none or minimal shocks vs. TT250: adjustable front and rear shocks.

Load capacity: E-Fat Bike: one-person or 250 pounds vs. TT250: 600-pounds or two-riders and gear.

Electric Fat Bike cost: $3,000 to over $7,000 vs. CSC TT250 Enduro cost: $2,195.00 – DELIVERED (plus set-up and documentation fees.)

Included equipment and accessories: E-Fat Bike: none vs. TT250: Headlight, LED tail light, LED turn signals, rear view mirrors, digital speedometer, tachometer, locking gas cap, steel bash plate, large front and rear risk brakes with stainless steel brake lines, electric start and kick starter, ignition and fork security locks, 300-watt alternator and handlebar switches pre-wired for accessories.

CSC TT250 Enduro

Standard – locking gas cap and 2.9-gallon gas tank

CSC TT250 Enduro

Standard – steel bash plate, kick starter and electric start

This doesn’t include the OPTIONAL accessories to make the TT250 even more capable off-road, like a full-skid plate, knobby tires, and CSC billet aluminum rear rack and soft luggage.

CSC TT250 Enduro

OPTIONAL – TT250 full aluminum skid plate

CSC TT250 Enduro

OPTIONAL CSC rear billet aluminum rear rack

CSC TT250 Enduro

TT250 tricked out with OPTIONAL knobby tires, skid plate, hand guards and exhaust

For the critics out there, the CSC TT250 Enduro is NOT the perfect dual-sport, motocross, or  adventure bike. BUT – the CSC TT250 Enduro remains the BEST value in a bike that can be used for commuting, trail riding, or ADV-light touring. Shop around – or attend an “Overland Expo –  and I think you will agree!

CSC TT250 Enduro

CSC TT250 Enduro – shown with OPTIONAL rear rack and top case

The CSC TT250 Enduro is also the value-leader when compared to some popular “novelty” rides. Compare the TT250 to the 125 cc Honda Monkey that costs $3,999.00:

Compare the TT250 to the 49 cc Honda Ruckus scooter that costs $2,749.00:

CSC Motorcycles 2019 Owners’ Rally, Moab, UT | Rally Recap

Great Riding, Challenging Weather, Unbeatable Scenery, Dependable CSC Motorcycles!

By Randy Reek

The first CSC Owners’ Rally in Moab, Utah is history. The Rally included a variety of CSC bikes, owners attending from across the country, and demo rides on all the CSC Motorcycles models. Friends of CSC owners also attended and participated in the rides with other brand bikes. Prospective CSC Motorcycle owners talked to experienced riders and examined the new models up close.

CSC Motorcycles

Then, we had huge swings in the weather. The days prior to the Rally included above-average rainfall. A cold front before the Rally turned the rain to snow above 6,000-feet. Unfortunately, Steve, Wade, and Joey (from CSC in California) got caught in a blizzard that closed I-70 in Colorado for three hours.

CSC Motorcycles

Stuck for three hours!

They missed the Tuesday night gathering at Zax Pizza in Moab – but we carried on without them!

CSC Motorcycles

Sorry you missed Supper on Tuesday, Steve and CSC Crew!

All the CSC riders chose the easier ride planned for Wednesday, May 22. The riders headed out of Moab and turned north into the LaSal Mountains. Normally, this is a very scenic ride high above the Moab valley. But as the LaSal Mountain Loop Road rose to over 8,100-feet, the misty rain turned to sleet and then snow as the temperatures dropped below freezing.

CSC Motorcycles

COLD and snow at 8,100-feet!

Thankfully, our route quickly descended back into Castle Valley. Next stop was Onion Creek Road. This is a great dual-sport route on a dirt road that crosses little Onion Creek about 20 times. Again, the misty rain turned to snow and riders were cautioned about the dirt road turning to greasy mud. This was an in-and-out ride on Onion Creek Road and we soon all turned around as the creek crossings got muddier and deeper.

Here is a short video of the muddy ride along Onion Creek:

Once back on Highway 128, we rode north a few miles to Fisher Towers. The overcast shielded the dramatic bluffs, but everyone agreed it was a fabulous view of the rock formations and the Colorado River valley. Then it was a fast ride back to Moab, where the CSC trailer was stationed with the demo bikes. We rode about 85 total miles.

CSC Motorcycles

Michael and his CSC RX3 above Castle Valley

Demo rides were possible on all the CSC models: TT250 Enduro and SG250 San Gabriel. RX3 Adventure and the new 2020 RX4. Even the CSC City Slicker electric bike was available for test rides.

CSC Motorcycles

CSC braved a blizzard to bring demo bikes to Moab!

Clearly the “star of the show” was the new CSC RX4. As it turned out, all of the CSC owners in attendance had RX3’s. (A few had more than one! Several also owned TT250’s.) Everyone wanted to look at and compare the larger and more powerful RX4. Thanks to Steve and the CSC Crew for making the long trip to Moab to provide these demos.

CSC Motorcycles

2020 CSC RX4 decked out for Moab with Shinko knobbies!

Thursday, May 23rd began again with hard rain. It had thundered during the night and the high elevations had “thunder snow”! The riders met in the morning, then agreed to gather at noon with the promise of clearing skies. After noon, we headed south towards a patch of blue sky. No sooner did we leave Moab it poured in town, again.

The group of CSC riders fought tremendous head winds for 20-miles on Highway 191 south of town before turning off onto the dirt, Looking Glass Arch Road. We endured long stretches of greasy, muddy road before reaching Looking Glass Arch.

After some photos, we continued on the planned route – but encountered continuous mud. Taking a vote, we agreed to “adapt and overcome” and retrace our steps, rather than fight the mud for 10 or 12 more miles. We still had to fight the head winds but made our way to the Needles Overlook. This is a bluff above the Colorado River south of Moab. In the distance are the bluffs of the White Rim (our destination on Friday.)

More rain and snow approaching

More rain and snow were all around us as we headed north towards Moab. We made a quick stop at Wilson Arch, and then got pummeled by 40 mph crosswinds and driving sleet and rain. By the time we got back to Moab we had ridden about 110 miles and were ready for a hot shower and the promise of some BBQ for supper.

Friday dawned clear and sunny – finally! The CSC riders headed south along the Colorado River before entering Canyonlands National Park. Along the way, we stopped for photos at “Thelma and Louise Point”. This is where the scene was filmed of the actresses driving off into the Grand Canyon – except Moab was the actual filming location.

The group reached the White Rim Trail and turned to ride to Musselman Arch. (We were told we would get fined for walking on the Arch!)

Close to the Arch is another dramatic overlook of the lower Colorado River. We all took plenty of pictures (notice the snow on the mountains in the background – where we rode on Wednesday.)

Then it was time to climb the Shafer Switchbacks as we concluded our trail ride. The White Rim Trail and the ride up the Switchbacks is dual-sport riding at its best! Here are more photos and a video of the climb:

At the top of the trail, some riders elected to explore Canyonlands further. Others turned towards town with the goal of riding into Arches National Park. The rest of us continued to Moab and loaded up for our drives home. My total mileage was 77 miles for the day.

Each day we had about 10 riders participate. CSC owners came from Utah, California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico – plus a gypsy from Florida (Lynn.) Many had never had the chance to ride in the Moab area previously. Everyone had a good time – despite the challenging weather.

Among the CSC owners, we had several RX3’s with over 5,000, 10,000, and more than 15,000 miles. We experienced no mechanical issues, not even a flat tire during the three days of challenging dual-sport riding.

The consensus was that Moab would be a great place for another CSC Owners’ Rally. But please nominate YOUR choice for a rally next year! (Fall in the Appalachians? Winter in Florida or Texas? Spring in Oregon?)

Thanks again to CSC Motorcycles for supporting its owners and building a community of riders with similar riding goals.
