CSC Motorcycles 2019 Owners’ Rally, Moab, UT | Rally Recap

Great Riding, Challenging Weather, Unbeatable Scenery, Dependable CSC Motorcycles!

By Randy Reek

The first CSC Owners’ Rally in Moab, Utah is history. The Rally included a variety of CSC bikes, owners attending from across the country, and demo rides on all the CSC Motorcycles models. Friends of CSC owners also attended and participated in the rides with other brand bikes. Prospective CSC Motorcycle owners talked to experienced riders and examined the new models up close.

CSC Motorcycles

Then, we had huge swings in the weather. The days prior to the Rally included above-average rainfall. A cold front before the Rally turned the rain to snow above 6,000-feet. Unfortunately, Steve, Wade, and Joey (from CSC in California) got caught in a blizzard that closed I-70 in Colorado for three hours.

CSC Motorcycles

Stuck for three hours!

They missed the Tuesday night gathering at Zax Pizza in Moab – but we carried on without them!

CSC Motorcycles

Sorry you missed Supper on Tuesday, Steve and CSC Crew!

All the CSC riders chose the easier ride planned for Wednesday, May 22. The riders headed out of Moab and turned north into the LaSal Mountains. Normally, this is a very scenic ride high above the Moab valley. But as the LaSal Mountain Loop Road rose to over 8,100-feet, the misty rain turned to sleet and then snow as the temperatures dropped below freezing.

CSC Motorcycles

COLD and snow at 8,100-feet!

Thankfully, our route quickly descended back into Castle Valley. Next stop was Onion Creek Road. This is a great dual-sport route on a dirt road that crosses little Onion Creek about 20 times. Again, the misty rain turned to snow and riders were cautioned about the dirt road turning to greasy mud. This was an in-and-out ride on Onion Creek Road and we soon all turned around as the creek crossings got muddier and deeper.

Here is a short video of the muddy ride along Onion Creek:

Once back on Highway 128, we rode north a few miles to Fisher Towers. The overcast shielded the dramatic bluffs, but everyone agreed it was a fabulous view of the rock formations and the Colorado River valley. Then it was a fast ride back to Moab, where the CSC trailer was stationed with the demo bikes. We rode about 85 total miles.

CSC Motorcycles

Michael and his CSC RX3 above Castle Valley

Demo rides were possible on all the CSC models: TT250 Enduro and SG250 San Gabriel. RX3 Adventure and the new 2020 RX4. Even the CSC City Slicker electric bike was available for test rides.

CSC Motorcycles

CSC braved a blizzard to bring demo bikes to Moab!

Clearly the “star of the show” was the new CSC RX4. As it turned out, all of the CSC owners in attendance had RX3’s. (A few had more than one! Several also owned TT250’s.) Everyone wanted to look at and compare the larger and more powerful RX4. Thanks to Steve and the CSC Crew for making the long trip to Moab to provide these demos.

Thursday, May 23rd began again with hard rain. It had thundered during the night and the high elevations had “thunder snow”! The riders met in the morning, then agreed to gather at noon with the promise of clearing skies. After noon, we headed south towards a patch of blue sky. No sooner did we leave Moab it poured in town, again.

The group of CSC riders fought tremendous head winds for 20-miles on Highway 191 south of town before turning off onto the dirt, Looking Glass Arch Road. We endured long stretches of greasy, muddy road before reaching Looking Glass Arch.

CSC Motorcycles

Looking Glass Arch

After some photos, we continued on the planned route – but encountered continuous mud. Taking a vote, we agreed to “adapt and overcome” and retrace our steps, rather than fight the mud for 10 or 12 more miles. We still had to fight the head winds but made our way to the Needles Overlook. This is a bluff above the Colorado River south of Moab. In the distance are the bluffs of the White Rim (our destination on Friday.)

More rain and snow approaching

More rain and snow were all around us as we headed north towards Moab. We made a quick stop at Wilson Arch, and then got pummeled by 40 mph crosswinds and driving sleet and rain. By the time we got back to Moab we had ridden about 110 miles and were ready for a hot shower and the promise of some BBQ for supper.

CSC Motorcycles

Wilson Arch, along Hwy 191 just before MORE rain!

Friday dawned clear and sunny – finally! The CSC riders headed south along the Colorado River before entering Canyonlands National Park. Along the way, we stopped for photos at “Thelma and Louise Point”. This is where the scene was filmed of the actresses driving off into the Grand Canyon – except Moab was the actual filming location.

The group reached the White Rim Trail and turned to ride to Musselman Arch. (We were told we would get fined for walking on the Arch!)

Close to the Arch is another dramatic overlook of the lower Colorado River. We all took plenty of pictures (notice the snow on the mountains in the background – where we rode on Wednesday.)

Then it was time to climb the Shafer Switchbacks as we concluded our trail ride. The White Rim Trail and the ride up the Switchbacks is dual-sport riding at its best! Here are more photos and a video of the climb:

CSC Motorcycles

Shafer Switchbacks, climbing up the White Rim Trail

At the top of the trail, some riders elected to explore Canyonlands further. Others turned towards town with the goal of riding into Arches National Park. The rest of us continued to Moab and loaded up for our drives home. My total mileage was 77 miles for the day.

Each day we had about 10 riders participate. CSC owners came from Utah, California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico – plus a gypsy from Florida (Lynn.) Many had never had the chance to ride in the Moab area previously. Everyone had a good time – despite the challenging weather.

Among the CSC owners, we had several RX3’s with over 5,000, 10,000, and more than 15,000 miles. We experienced no mechanical issues, not even a flat tire during the three days of challenging dual-sport riding.

The consensus was that Moab would be a great place for another CSC Owners’ Rally. But please nominate YOUR choice for a rally next year! (Fall in the Appalachians? Winter in Florida or Texas? Spring in Oregon?)

Thanks again to CSC Motorcycles for supporting its owners and building a community of riders with similar riding goals.

Tools for ADV Riding | What I Carry for My CSC RX3 Adventure

ADV Riding 101: What tools to take on a dual-sport ride

by Randy Reek

If you are a dual-sport rider you WILL be beyond the reach of motorcycle repair shops and even cell service. Otherwise, what’s the point of riding a dual-sport?

The most scenic (and challenging) destinations are beyond the pavement. That’s the attraction of dual-sport motorcycles. You can go where even stock 4×4’s can’t. You can start your ride from your garage, head for trails or unpaved roads, and carry gear for several days of unsupported “overland” travel. Then, after your adventure riding, you can turn back onto the highway and ride home.

CSC RX3 Adventure

CSC RX3 Adventure in the high desert of Arizona. All tools in the rear top box.

I have ridden many thousands of miles off-road including ADV routes like the Trans-American Trail (TAT), several Backcountry Discovery Routes (BDR’s), plus over 1,000-miles of unpaved back roads in Alaska – after riding over 6,000 miles on the highway to and from Alaska. One thing that is a constant is being prepared to handle any mechanical issues that arise along the way.

CSC RX3 Adventure

Randy riding the CSC RX3 on the White Rim Trail in Moab, Utah

Dual-sport riding is harder on equipment than highway riding. Many recreational street riders will never face a mechanical issue on the road – IF they do any preventative maintenance at home. But dual-sport riders travel over rougher terrain and with added weight of camping gear and supplies for days or weeks of travel. The reality is that you are most likely to suffer a breakdown of some kind in the WORST possible location, that is, when you and your bike are under the greatest strain.

One of the deciding factors in choosing the CSC RX3 Adventure is the standard package of  racks and luggage. The RX3 includes racks and luggage that cost hundreds – even over $1,000 – to add to any other bare ADV bike. This standard luggage is sufficient for ADV rides from overnights to weeks. You have room for all of your gear if you plan ahead.

Your goal is to take everything you NEED and nothing you don’t. Believe me, you will enjoy the riding more and put less stress on both you and the bike if you strictly limit what you carry. I recommend making a list of everything you will pack. We will cover clothes, camping and cooking gear later. Today, we will be discussing what I take along for tools and emergency supplies.

First, let’s look at what I wear and carry to be prepared on every dual-sport ride:

I always wear protective riding pants and a jacket. These are either ventilated or waterproof, depending on the weather. In my jacket pockets I carry a small digital camera, notepad, pen, and a cooling nylon neck wet wrap that also serves as a dust mask. I also carry a carabiner-style lock for my helmet. My pants have a belt with a Leatherman multi-tool. I carry my wallet in one pocket and a bandanna in another pocket.

I mention the outer layer of riding clothing because the Leatherman is the most frequent tool I reach for. I use the knife, pliers, and screwdriver almost daily to cut rope, tighten loose screws, adjust cables, and tighten and trim Zip ties.

Note: get used to listening for rattles and vibrations. Tighten loose bolts and screws before they fall out and parts are damaged or gear is lost! Loose electrical connections will cause intermittent glitches.

Secondly, prepare your motorcycle for the abuse of off-road riding with proper tires, guards, and options. Take test rides with your bike fully-loaded. Before a major ADV ride, go on a two or three day shake-down ride. Starting out with unfamiliar equipment and a practiced daily routine is asking for trouble.  See also Top FIVE Modifications to Your CSC RX3 for Adventure Riding

CSC RX3 Adventure

Equip your RX3 Adventure for off-road riding with skid plate and knobby tires!

Next, let’s look at the tools I carry to fix my RX3 on the trail or remote road. It should be obvious that you can’t carry everything – nor should you want to weigh your bike down. I don’t carry spare levers or an extra chain. I don’t carry spare brake or shift cables. If I crash or break one of these parts I will either fix it or limp along until I reach civilization. (You might need to get creative with duct tape, wire and Zip ties!)

Here is my dual-sport tool list:

Soft tool Bag: master chain links, chain breaker tool, tool roll with slip joint pliers, needle nose pliers, large crescent wrench, small crescent wrench, 3/8” ratchet, 3/8 to 1/4 adapter, 1/4-inch metric socket set, Zip ties, JB weld epoxy, Quick Steel, multi-screwdriver; Seal Mate for fork seals, Allen wrenches, Y-tool,
Tire irons, bead tool, small bead lube/hand sanitizer
Super glue, Loctite, duct tape, electrical tape, misc wire crimp-connectors, stranded electrical wire, emery cloth, scuff pad,
Fuses – micro and regular and puller, glass fuse for GPS power lead
Chain lube, WD-40, spare spark plug, spark plug wrench,
Front inner-tube, rear inner-tube, (the rear tube is optional since you can get by with a front tube in the rear tire in a pinch. I carry a spare tube even when riding a cycle with tubeless tires! Also carry tire plugs for tubeless tires), valve tool, valve cores, inner tube patches and glue,
Hose clamps, radiator stop leak, paper towels, shop towel,
Bike air pump, (A 12-volt compressor is an optional luxury.)
First aid kit with the basics like antibiotic ointment, Band-Aids, gauze pads, tape, etc.

That’s a pretty comprehensive list. I have yet to run into anything I couldn’t fix on my bike (usually a friend’s bike) and get to the next town. I have patched together broken fenders and missing brackets that lasted for another 1,000-miles. But it also goes without saying that it doesn’t make any sense to carry a single part or tool that you don’t know how to use!

Over the years I have also eliminated things like a gas siphon hose and tow strap. My RX3 has a huge gas tank and I am never more than 100 miles between stations. There is no way I could tow or be towed by another bike where I ride. If in doubt, leave it out!

Read a manual, watch tutorials (See CSCMotorcycles.com for most maintenance and repair topics), and search YouTube to learn how to perform routine maintenance and repair functions. Proper maintenance will prevent 99% of breakdowns! Hang around a local shop or experienced rider to learn how to change a tire and patch an inner tube. Think through possible repairs. Pack the right size wrench to remove your wheels before you bother to carry spare tubes or a compressor!

CSC RX3 Adventure

Every tool and repair item is easily contained in the standard RX3 top box

Finally, plan how you will carry this equipment. On my RX3 Adventure I pack everything listed above in the standard molded plastic top box. I never take my tools out. I carry everything on this list on every ride – on and off the road.

The “Best Practice” would be to carry your tools low in side cases. If you prefer the standard molded side pannier cases, divide the list above in half. Keeping your tools in the side cases has the advantage of lowering your center of gravity. In my case, I only use soft panniers when riding dual-sport routes – and I don’t like hard tools in soft luggage. So I make the decision to forfeit some stability and carry the weight of the tools in my rear box. This allows me to only add the side panniers for overnight camping trips.

CSC RX3 Adventure

A tank bag serves as your glove box or console on the ADV bike

This article doesn’t touch on the many other pieces of equipment, gear and personal items that will make your ADV rides more comfortable and efficient. For example, where do you carry maps, flash light, snacks and toilet paper! We will cover that in the next article, but for now make a list of all the little things you would carry in the glove box or center console of your vehicle on a long trip. Some people like to put these small items in a backpack – and that is quick and easy. I prefer to not carry the weight on my back and opt for a tank bag. Just remember, Less is More! If you aren’t SURE you really need it – leave it out! Plus, review your list after every ADV ride. Then cross off anything you didn’t use and are now relatively sure you can live without next time.

CSC Adds A Second Electric Cycle to Its Lineup for 2019

Introducing the CSC Wiz: 100% Electric Scooter

Americans are beginning to embrace electric vehicles. Hybrid autos are being replaced by a new generation of plug-in electrics. Most brands now have at least one electric vehicle, while Tesla rules the market with its popular fully-electric models.

Some motorcycle manufacturers are now introducing electric models. CSC Motorcycles joined the market in 2018 with the City Slicker. The City Slicker is a fully-electric motorcycle, with a 3.2 KW motor linked to the rear wheel by a belt drive. The 72-volt 30-amp hour lithium battery provides the power and delivers a top speed of 43 to 46 mph, depending on rider weight. The City Slicker has two drive modes, with a maximum range of about 60 miles in ECO mode.

CSC Motorcycles

CSC City Slicker electric motorcycles in stock

The City Slicker has been very popular with motorcycle riders. The e-cycle has the appearance of a small sport bike, with a traditional saddle and tank – although the “tank” is really a lockable storage trunk!

For 2019, CSC Motorcycles is offering a new electric vehicle that closely resembles a gas-engine scooter. The “Wiz” has the traditional scooter step-through frame. The new Wiz is powered by a large 3.0 KW electric motor. Unlike the City Slicker’s mid-engine and drive belt, the Wiz uses a direct drive rear hub motor.

CSC Wiz

2019 CSC Wiz – electric scooter in Red and White

Versatility is clearly evident in the design of the Wiz. It includes a standard, lockable rear cargo trunk and has additional storage under the two-person saddle. There are also foot rests, grab handles and a back rest for the passenger.

CSC Wiz

2019 CSC Wiz – storage under the 2-passenger seat

While the City Slicker is an electric scooter that looks like a small sport motorcycle, the new CSC Wiz has traditional scooter utility. The step-through frame allows the rider (and passenger) to mount with ease – rather than swinging a leg over the tall saddle. You ride confidently, flat-footed on the wide floor boards and in a more upright position.

Like the City Slicker, the CSC Wiz includes a deep-cycle battery charger. The charger is simply plugged into the port on the scooter (although the battery can be completely removed for charging or storage.) Riding range is projected to be 35 to over 50 miles, depending on riding speed, temperature and elevation. The Wiz has a top speed of 40 to 43 mph, depending on rider weight.

CSC Wiz

2019 CSC Wiz – electric scooter in Blue and White

The City Slicker introduced a new segment of riders to electric cycles. But many city riders prefer the scooter frame-style, so CSC Motorcycles is happy to offer this second electric vehicle option. The price for the CSC Wiz is $2,495.00, plus $400 for inbound freight, set-up, and documentation fees. This price includes shipping to your home address, anywhere in the lower 48-states!

Like the City Slicker, the CSC Wiz is priced BELOW many electric BICYCLES! Unlike ebikes, the Wiz includes front and rear suspension, headlight with high and low beam, LED tail light and turn signals, full instrumentation, speedometer with trip odometer, and security locks. The Wiz has regenerative braking to recharge the battery. There is a reverse gear for parking. The Wiz even includes a USB-charging port for your cell phone!

The Wiz is not a cheap gas scooter, however. The Wiz is a deluxe electric scooter designed for the rider who does not want a gas motor, ongoing maintenance, or any reason to ever visit a gas station! You have a silent, clean, and maintenance-free electric vehicle that you can store in your bedroom! And a vehicle that will carry you, groceries, and a passenger on long loops through town. The powerful electric Wiz will even out-run most 50cc gas scooters!

CSC Motorcycles ships the Wiz – inspected, serviced, and ready to ride – direct to your door. There are no middlemen, no dealers, and no dealer mark-ups or sales gimmicks. Like all the CSC models, the Wiz is sold only direct to the customer. After the sale, CSC backs the Wiz with a full, 12-month, unlimited mileage warranty.

CSC Wiz

2019 CSC Wiz – electric scooter in “Electric Green” and White

You have three color choices for the new 2019 CSC Wiz: Red, Blue, or “Electric Green” and White. Deposits are now being accepted for the 2019 CSC Wiz. $500.00 holds your new “E-scooter”, with delivery expected mid-June.

EbikeSchool.com Names the CSC City Slicker One of the Top Five Electric Motorcycles

Is the CSC City Slicker ELECTRIC Motorcycle the Perfect Commuting Vehicle? Micah from EbikeSchool.com has ridden and reviewed the City Slicker and says YES!

The CSC City Slicker is a fully-electric motorcycle. It closely resembles a small motorcycle, but it is fully electric with a belt drive. The CSC City Slicker is available NOW for only $2,495.00 (plus fees*) in your choice of blue and white or red and white.

CSC City Slicker electric motorcycle

CSC City Slicker – ONLY $2,495.00 including shipping*

Micah says, “The City Slicker is not intended to be an electric super bike. It’s the perfect urban electric motorcycle. Really fun to ride. Crazy affordable at only $2,495.00 – that’s nuts!” (See the full review video with the Top Five electric motorcycles – ranging from over $30,000 to just $2,495.00 for the City Slicker here: https://youtu.be/17Yfrptvs4g).

Steve Seidner, President of CSC Motorcycles said, “The City Slicker motorcycle is a new electric vehicle. It has so many features not found on electric bicycles or scooters. The City Slicker has power, speed and range that is unmatched in its category. We want everyone to experience the fun and economy of the City Slicker, so we have kept the price at only $2,495.00. We also know that it is impossible for most people to come to Azusa, California to pick-up their City Slicker, so we include free shipping to new owners!”

CSC City Slicker electric motorcycle

CSC City Slicker electric motorcycle with full suspension and disk brakes

The CSC City Slicker is perfect for commuting to work or school, running errands, and fun rides around town. Top speed is 43 to 46 mph, depending on rider weight. Riding range is dependent on speed – that is, higher speeds drain the battery faster. Riding around town at 20 mph will give you an approximate 62-mile range. That is huge for an electric motorcycle! Riding faster at 37 mph will reduce the range to about 37 miles. All this translates to a “blended” range of 40 to 50 miles in normal fast and slow city driving – which is plenty for the average urban commute.

CSC City Slicker electric motorcycle

Simply plug into any 120-volt outlet to recharge!

The huge range and higher speed are accomplished by a large 72-volt lithium ion battery. The deep-cycle battery charger fully recharges the battery in 6 to 8 hours using a standard 120-volt household outlet. Partial recharges require proportionally less time. The battery is recharged simply by plugging the charger into a port on the side of the bike.

The power is supplied by a 3.2-Kilowatt motor. Compare this huge motor to the 250 or 500-watt motors found in electric bikes and you can see why the City Slicker is much more powerful.

CSC City Slicker electric motorcycle

HUGE lockable front storage compartment

The CSC City Slicker is great fun to ride. Unlike bicycles, the City Slicker is also super safe on the roads with motorcycle-type disk brakes, LED turn signals, rear view mirrors, headlight, tail light and brake lights. The City Slicker even includes a cool REVERSE gear for ease of parking.

The City Slicker is comfortable to ride with wide 12-inch tires and plush suspension front and rear. The dash includes a battery level gauge as well as a speedometer, odometer, and trip odometer to track your riding. The City Slicker also includes regenerative braking to boost battery life. The bike has a lockable storage compartment (where the gas tank would be on a standard motorcycle.  An OPTIONAL rear rack and hard or soft rear cases are available from CSC.) The ignition and front fork are also lockable for security while parked. There are also passenger pegs for two-up riding – although the maximum carrying capacity is limited to 330 pounds.

The CSC City Slicker is available NOW for only $2,495.00 – including delivery, plus fees* – in your choice of blue and white or red and white. This price is LESS than many electric BICYCLES with a fraction of the features!

The CSC TT250 was named “the BEST Motorcycle Value in the U.S.” For 2019 the TT250 is BETTER!

The CSC TT250 Enduro has redefined the affordable dual-sport motorcycle. For 2019, the TT250 is STILL only $2,195.00 – including shipping. Motorcycle.com magazine named the CSC TT250 Enduro the BEST motorcycle value in the US!

The lightweight CSC TT250 is equipped with everything you need for dual-sport riding: 18-inch rear and 21-inch front wire wheels with knobby tires, strong hydraulic front and rear disk brakes, adjustable suspension front and rear, a 300-watt alternator to power accessories, handlebar switches pre-wired to underseat accessory outlets, a comfortable seat and more.

The CSC TT250 Enduro is the perfect motorcycle for riding trails, commuting to work, or touring the countryside. The high ground clearance and adjustable suspension will tackle off-road riding. The snappy air-cooled, counter-balanced engine will take you through the woods or down the highway. The TT250 is a motorcycle that is basic yet supplied with features not available on competitive bikes costing more than twice as much. Simplicity is combined with proven design and manufacturing – and the bike is delivered from CSC direct to your door for unbeatable savings!

The 230cc motor used in the CSC TT250 Enduro (and the CSC SG250 San Gabriel) is a modernized version of the “world-design” motorcycle CG engine first developed by Honda back in 1975. Honda and other manufacturers wanted to export motorcycles into the growing market of Southeast Asia. But the economies of these countries were far behind Japan at the time. The engineers noted the contrast in motorcycle usage in these countries, “It was normal to see a child on the tank and the wife on the back, with two to four people riding together. And some people loaded vegetables, chickens, and pigs onto their motorcycles. We even saw motorcycles towing loaded carts.”

There were no motorcycle “dealers” in these emerging markets, only local repair shops which disassembled and repaired motorcycles that were broken down. Customers brought their motorcycles in only when they had stopped running. The concept of routine maintenance was completely foreign to the motor bike owners.

To tap into these demanding markets, Honda developed a new motorcycle engine that was specifically designed to require minimal maintenance. The lightweight, short-pushrod overhead valve 125cc engine featured a gear-driven, single camshaft structure for both intake and exhaust. The shaft is located where one would find the cam-chain housing in a more conventional overhead cam engine. This engine was later manufactured in a new factory in Brazil for the growing market in South America. Honda introduced a new motorcycle for the South American market called the CG125 Titan.

Zongshen Modern Factory – Building Over 3 MILLION Motors Per Year

Over 40 years later, the original CG125 patent has long-expired. Today, Zongshen, the manufacturer of the CSC TT250, has a modern factory that builds over 3 MILLION engines each year. Zongshen builds both a 125cc and a 230cc version of the old CG engine. CSC distributes only the 230cc version in its modern motorcycles, with the additional update of a counter-balancer. This dependable motor is available in both the CSC TT250 Enduro and the CSC SG250 San Gabriel street bike.

By American standards, 230cc is considered small. But in the CSC TT250, this engine is placed in a motorcycle that weighs only 300 pounds! That gives the CSC TT250 Enduro both low-end torque and highway capabilities. Fuel economy is typically over 65 miles per gallon. When combined with a 2.9-gallon gas tank, this provides the rider with a range exceeding 175 miles.

CSC TT250 Enduro appeals to two types of riders. First is riders who want a basic, all-purpose motorcycle. These riders appreciate the nimble handling and performance of the 230cc engine in the lightweight chassis. Just turn the key and ride – OR stomp the kick starter for some nostalgia.

The second category of CSC TT250 Enduro owners are experienced dual-sport riders who want to customize their bike for their own style of riding. Need more grunt off-road? You can swap to heavy knobbies, add hand guards and a full-coverage aluminum skid plate.
